Collaborations

The Öresund Metro is part of the Greater Copenhagen common Traffic Charter and the STRING network.

The Greater Copenhagen Committee

The Greater Copenhagen Committee is a partnership uniting Region Skåne and Region Halland in Sweden, Region Zealand and the Capital Region of Denmark as well as the associated 85 municipalities in a joint effort to create a highly developed metropolitan region. A region that builds on sustainable growth, high employment and liveability for the 4.3 million inhabitants.

The Öresund Metro is included in the joint traffic charter, which is a Swedish-Danish agreement on priorities in infrastructure supported by the parties in the Greater Copenhagen Committee.

The Greater Copenhagen Committee is a business policy collaboration that brings together the regions of Skåne, Halland, Sjælland, and Hovedstaden. In addition, the associated 85 municipalities in those regions are part of a joint effort to create a highly developed metropolitan region. A region that is based on sustainable growth, high employment, and quality of life for 4.3 million inhabitants.

One of Greater Copenhagen's designated priorities is the Öresund Metro. Greater Copenhagen describes the Öresund Metro as Europe's first subway between two countries, and as an important investment to cope with significantly increased freight flows across Europe. This is particularly important after 2029 when the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel between Germany and Denmark is expected to open.

STRING

STRING is a cross-border political collaboration consisting of cities and regions from Oslo to Hamburg. The Öresund Metro is part of STRING's 2030 Strategy, which is an agreement on infrastructure priorities supported by the 15 STRING members from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Germany, due to their significance for the entire TEN-T ScandMed corridor.

STRING works broadly and long-term to realize a sustainable, innovative, and competitive mega-region in northern Europe. This requires first and foremost a sustainable and coherent infrastructure that physically connects the region along the EU's prioritized ScandMed transport corridor.

As part of this, STRING has identified more fixed links across the Øresund as a common infrastructure priority to maximize the regional development effects of the Fehmarn Belt link - where the Öresund Metro, together with the Helsingør and Helsingborg-link, is a prioritized option. These will become particularly important after the Fehmarnbelt tunnel opens in 2029, as traffic flows across the Øresund are expected to increase and create capacity issues on the Øresund Bridge.

The Øresund is an important transport hub that risks becoming a bottleneck without more fixed links to complement the Øresund Bridge. The capacity issue in the Øresund region is therefore a concern
